Trashless.io is an impact tech startup focusing on household waste and recycling
Our contribution to the global climate agenda is through education and facilitating behavioural change
Founder and CEO Joonas Reenpää
The company was started in 2020 when our founder Joonas Reenpää was getting frustrated with the amount of trash his family of four was producing. In the news he could read about national waste statistics and the direction everyone needed to take, but it was impossible to know what his current contribution was.
He set forth to collect comparable data and weighed everything for a year with a kitchen scale. The results were highly informative and rewarding! He could now see, for a fact, how much waste was produced, which were the largest categories and how much was recycled! He could see the numbers were better than the averages shown in statistics, and knew there would be many people who'd be interested in their results too.
The process however, had been quite burdensome, and not many people could be expected to repeat it. What followed was the idea to simplify the data collection and allow everyone the chance to see their own waste statistics.
With our app we're determined to bring clarity to recycling and put the spotlight on consumer behaviour. It's no longer acceptable to not care about waste.

Information about General Data Protection Regulation
(GDPR)
We may be collecting and using information from you if you are from the European Economic Area (EEA), and in this section of
our Privacy Policy we are going to explain exactly how and why is this data collected, and how we maintain this data under
protection from being replicated or used in the wrong way.
What is GDPR?
GDPR is an EU-wide privacy and data protection law that regulates how EU residents' data is protected by companies and
enhances the control the EU residents have, over their personal data.
The GDPR is relevant to any globally operating company and not just the EU-based businesses and EU residents. Our
customers’ data is important irrespective of where they are located, which is why we have implemented GDPR controls as our
baseline standard for all our operations worldwide.
What is personal data?
Any data that relates to an identifiable or identified individual. GDPR covers a broad spectrum of information that could be used
on its own, or in combination with other pieces of information, to identify a person. Personal data extends beyond a person’s
name or email address. Some examples include financial information, political opinions, genetic data, biometric data, IP
addresses, physical address, sexual orientation, and ethnicity.
The Data Protection Principles include requirements such as:
● Personal data collected must be processed in a fair, legal, and transparent way and should only be used in a way that a
person would reasonably expect.
● Personal data should only be collected to fulfil a specific purpose and it should only be used for that purpose.
Organizations must specify why they need the personal data when they collect it.
● Personal data should be held no longer than necessary to fulfil its purpose.
● People covered by the GDPR have the right to access their own personal data. They can also request a copy of their data,
and that their data be updated, deleted, restricted, or moved to another organization.
Why is GDPR important?
GDPR adds some new requirements regarding how companies should protect individuals' personal data that they collect and
process. It also raises the stakes for compliance by increasing enforcement and imposing greater fines for breach. Beyond
these facts it's simply the right thing to do. At Trashless.io we strongly believe that your data privacy is very important and we
already have solid security and privacy practices in place that go beyond the requirements of this new regulation.
Individual Data Subject's Rights - Data Access,
Portability and Deletion
We are committed to helping our customers meet the data subject rights requirements of GDPR. Trashless.io processes or stores
all personal data in fully vetted, DPA compliant vendors. We do store all conversation and personal data for up to 6 years unless
your account is deleted. In which case, we dispose of all data in accordance with our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, but
we will not hold it longer than 60 days
We are aware that if you are working with EU customers, you need to be able to provide them with the ability to access, update,
retrieve and remove personal data. We got you! We've been set up as self service from the start and have always given you
access to your data and your customers data. Our customer support team is here for you to answer any questions you might
have about working with the API.

Biodegradable waste is one of the major waste categories we all produce at home. We can divide bio into three different subcategories based on their possible use:
Firstly, we have the non-edible waste such as banana peels, apple cores and herb pot soil. Basically anything biodegradable that you cannot find use for at home. Secondly, we have food items that you could've eaten but didn't in time, and thus they have gone bad. Moldy, soggy or otherwise unpleasant food items. And lastly we have the food you've prepared or bought ready, for some reason but didn't eat.
The majority of bio waste is comprised of the last two subcategories. The key to reducing these is in planning and reacting! Buy groceries based on a plan, avoid buying on instinct unless you know how you will use the item. React to what you already have and try to use items before they go bad.
A common problem I hear people have with recycling is having enough space for all the different bins underneath their sink. We commonly associate only the cabinet directly underneath the sink as the place for waste bins. Why is this?
Naturally as you wash your dishes at the sink and discard remaining food items, this is the optimal location for your bio waste bin. The cabinet keeps some of the possible unpleasant smells and hides the bins from sight. Commonly we also keep our mixed waste bin in the same place.
But when it comes to dry or less smelly waste such as paper, cardboard and metal, there is no need to try to cram everything in that one small space. You can get creative and find other places where you can sort your waste out of sight.
Here's an example how to utilize a small space on the wall between two doors.
My wife recently got into making fresh juices from fruit and veg, and there's been quite a few new experiments since! Lots of vitamins, minerals and great taste all around! 😁
Juicers are great tools at getting the liquid goodiness out of even the hardest vegetables like carrots! But as a sideproduct you are left with plenty of pulp. You should never throw this away, as it still packs a lot of fibers and vitamins!
You can eat it as such, or make an easy coleslaw or add it to another salad. Other than that, there are many ways how to use the pulp. Today I decided to bake sourdough buns and incorporate the pulp.
The buns looked bright pink going in the oven, but once cooked, you really couldn't tell they're got all that fruit and veg in them! Less food wasted, healthier buns, happier bellies!
One of the most effective ways in reducing household waste is making sure you discard as little edible food as possible. While you'll be wasting less resources, you'll also be saving money. It's a real win-win!
Rule number one is never buy food items you don't know if you'll use! They most often end up going bad and you'll be forced to throw them out. What a waste of resources and money!
Besides that, the second most important way to reduce waste is to make sure you don't waste your leftovers and scraps. Some of us are more creative with scraps, from potato peel chips to using carrot peels in breadmaking or vegetable broth. Nevermind if you're not up to that! The general idea here is hiding the leftovers or scraps in something delicious!
Casseroles, pastas, sauces and pizzas are all excellent choices! Nobody will ever know you made use of the leftovers, unless you tell them of course! 😀
I recently had the privilege of visiting the remote Galápagos Islands in Ecuador. It's a volcanic archipelago with remarkable geologic activity and a vast number of endemic species, both animal and plant. The islands are perhaps most widely known for Charles Darwin's visit and the inspiration it gave to his theory of evolution.
At Galápagos, everything including drinking water is brought in from mainland Ecuador. There are also no waste management facilities or water recycling systems. And this is one of the most biodiverse places in the world, highly vulnerable to climate change and pollution!
I visited the Charles Darwin Research Station in Puerto Ayora and learned about the past and present of Galápagos Islands, a tour I can highly recommend! A part of the exhibition was centered around environmental actions taken by the government and different non-profit conservation organizations.
Regarding consumer waste production, I found the three familiar R's: Reduce, Recycle and Reuse. These are the universal guidelines we all need to follow, even if our habitat is not as sensitive as the Galápagos islands!
Christmas means a lot to most of us. It's about spending time with your family, showing gratitude and making people happy. Enjoying delicious food and giving presents are also an important part of the celebration, but to some, can cause mixed feelings.
Christmas is the largest consumer holiday of the year. It means we buy more food and specialty goods then, than any other time of the year. And buying more means there's undoubtedly more waste!
Ultimately, it would be ideal if we all celebrated with less stuff and focused on spending time together. However, with such strong emotions and memories related to Christmas, I think it's best we move towards that progressively.
I made a short video with three tips on how to make your Christmas a little bit more sustainable, enjoy!
Tips on how to keep your bio waste bin in check! No smells and no leaking!
Biowaste is most often the largest waste category and can amount to over 30 % of a familys waste output. It is also one of the most divisive waste to sort, because it is commonly associated with smells and leaking.
There are a couple of reasons why your biowaste bin may be smelly or even leaking, but the main culprit behind both is moisture. In this video you'll find our tips on how to keep your biowaste bin in check and avoid the mess!
Avoid putting anything hot in your bin, don't cover the bin and allow moisture to condense, and put any liquids in their individual bag first before putting it in the biowaste bin. You should also have something underneath the liner to absorb the moisture: egg cartons, newspaper and stale bread all work magnificently.
If worst comes to worst and your bag ends up leaking, put another bag over the bin and flip the contents inside the new bag. You'll have to clean your bin of course, which should be done regularly in any case!
How to measure your waste amounts for the Trashless.io app
To get the most out of the Trashless.io mobile app, you need to be able to measure the amount of waste you produce. Waste statistics are measured in annual weight output per person, which is terribly burdensome for an individual to calculate (believe me I know, I've weighed everything for a whole year!).
The Trashless.io app does the work for you, all you need to do is measure the volume of each waste category as you are taking the trash out. It might seem difficult to measure at first, not least because of all the different size bins and bags we use. But once you get the hang of it, you can gaze at your bags and determine quite accurately what the volume is.
The key is knowing how large your bins are, and from there on it becomes simple: how full do you think the bin is? Here's a video with me explaining the basics of measuring waste volume!
Some think that it's self-explanatory that we all recycle, others don't see the point. The harsh reality though is that, there is no way to reason how we can afford not to keep resources in use in the future. We simply must find ways to cause less strain on the environment, and recycling household waste is one of the most low-hanging fruit there is to pick!
While there's countless good reasons to recycle, the most powerful tend to be the ones affecting each and everyone of us. Here's a list of four reasons that should make it easier for anyone to see why you should in fact be recycling.
By recycling, you can achieve all of the following:
1. Reduce your waste-derived CO₂ emissions by up to 50 %
2. Keep up to 150 kg more resources in use each year
3. Save money on waste collection: mixed waste is generally 50 % more expensive than recyclables
4. Inspire others and multiply the benefits for all of us
From using the Trashless.io app I know, that my household recycles 92 % of our waste. We have plenty of room for improvement especially on the total amount of waste we create, but in terms of recycling we're doing a pretty good job!
What category is most important to recycle and why?
A common question about household waste and recycling is which category should I priotize? You can look at it from many angles, but in the end your own waste mix and total output determine what's most important. With the Trashless.io app you can find out in just two weeks!
Saying that a specific waste category is most important does not mean that the rest should not be recycled, far from it. It's just a common question that's all, you can look at it sort of as the first step. When I begin recycling, which is the first one I tackle, so to speak.
Here's an infograph with a couple ideas on how to look at this. The focus is naturally on households and everyday waste that each of us deal with at home.
Most likely biodegradable waste should be your top pick, then plastic followed by glass and metal. If not then perhaps cardboard or paper. Download our app and see for yourself!
The Trashless.io app is now available on both app stores!
Our mobile app Trashless.io is available on both Apple and Google Play stores. It's a free download and there are no in-app purchases. With as little as 14 days of tracking your waste output, you will have a reliable snapshot of your household waste production and recycling level.
Yoy will also be able to align yourself with Finnish averages in both waste production and recycling, and awareded a score between 0 and 100. The app will very clearly state how well you perform within the population in Finland.
In a separate view you will see your waste mix breakdown by category and have a reference to Finnish averages in category sizes. Throughout the app you will find recycling information and hints on how to improve.
After the first two-week sprint, you can continue submiting more waste data in order to improve the accuracy of your scores. And soon you might notice how you're changing your habits and performing even better!
